About Renters Insurance
Renter’s insurance is basically a type of home insurance that protects you against accidents, damages, and losses that occur in your apartment. Simply put, it is the coverage that protects your personal belongings. All renters’ policies written through our CoverageHut program are written on a replacement cost basis, meaning that you, the insured, will receive the money necessary to purchase new items that are equivalent to what was damaged. There is no adjustment for depreciation. Also included in a renters policy is personal liability coverage. Liability insurance will cover liability associated with damages caused to others by you or on your property and follows you wherever you go. For example, if you are playing golf and hit a ball that breaks a window on a house that is located near the course, your liability coverage would pay for the broken window.

Frequently Asked Questions
I don't own very much, so why would I get renters insurance?
Think of all the possessions in your apartment. TV, stereo, furniture, clothing and other Items.
Without insurance if you were to have those possessions damaged or taken, would you be able to
replace them? With renters insurance you would pay your deductible and have these items replaced.
Most think "it won't happen to me" but paying a small amount a month allow you to replace your
possessions rather to pay for all these items without the help of the insurance company.
Doesn't my landlord's insurance cover my possessions?
No. Landlord insurance only covers the exterior or structural damage to the building. If the
entire building was damaged, landlord's insurance would cover the building but none of your
possessions. Simply stated, when you lease an apartment, landlord property coverage covers what you
would see in an empty apartment. Your renters insurance protects the items you bring into your
apartment.
What are renter's insurance deductibles?
A deductible is the amount you will have to pay out of your own pocket before your renters
insurance applies. For example, if you have a $500 deductible and fire damages your apartment
furniture in the amount of $2,000, the insurance company would pay $1,500 ($2,000 less your $500
deductible).
What if my property is stolen?
Theft, burglary or robbery claims should always be immediately reported to the police. Some
policies provide coverage for stolen property only if there has been forcible entry into a locked home or
apartment. Prior to purchase, you should contact your agent at CoverageHut to discuss individual
situations.
Are expensive items such as jewelry, computers, etc covered?
Renter's insurance policies will generally cover this type of property. However, each policy
typically provides a limit for how much they will cover. Policies may apply limits if burglary or theft
causes the loss.
Are items in my garage or in a storage unit covered?
Renters insurance usually provides an extension of coverage for property away from your
primary residence location. Check your policy for specific coverage and limits.
Is my roommate covered under my policy?
Probably not, unless that person is a named insured or a relative. If you have a roommate, check
with your agent at CoverageHut about coverage for him or her.
What happens to my renter's insurance coverage if I move?
In most cases, you can simply provide your new address and some information about the
construction of the building at your new location if you move within the state in which you are currently
insured. Prior to your move, contact your agent at Coveragehut to make sure coverage is moved to
another address, especially with an out of state move.
What determines the rate of my renters insurance?
Several factors. The number of units in your building, exterior construction, age of building,
location to nearest water source can all be taken into consideration. Other factors may include
amounts of insurance on your contents, claims history and your consumer credit rating.
What if my dog were to run out of my apartment and bite someone... would I be covered?
Yes. If your dog isn't on the restricted dog lists published by your apartment owner or on your
insurance policy, the liability portion of your policy would cover the injury to the other party up to the
specificied amount.
What if someone slips on my kitchen floor and injures themselves... is this covered on my renter's
policy?
Yes. The liability portion of the policy would pay up to the amount listed on the policy.
